Merriam Webster's Spanish English Dictionary

Are you looking for a good, solid Spanish English dictionary to use for learning Spanish? You simply can't go wrong with a Merriam Webster... This book has the typical format you expect: the first half is a Spanish to English dictionary and the second half of the book is an English to Spanish dictionary.

The book begins with some usage and explanation notes. This gives you the details of how all the information about each word entry is presented. There is a section on pronunciation so you should be able to pronounce the new words. There are pages for the abbreviations used and the various pronunciation symbols.

The front of the book also has a section on Spanish grammar. This gives a quick overview of all the Spanish parts of speech. As this is a true Spanish to English and also English to Spanish type of dictionary, there is also a section on English grammar written in Spanish.

There's also a good unit on conjugating Spanish verbs - including the full conjugation of all the irregular verbs.

This is a well-done book with everything you'd expect and need in a portable dictionary. A nice feature this book has that not all dictionaries do is a sample correspondence section -- it has various types of sample letters written in Spanish that you can use. The topics of the letters include things like a request for information, applying for a job, sending a letter of thanks, etc. These letters are instructive not only for their translations, but also giving the standard formatting of the date and layout used for a business letter in Spanish.
